This subtropical oasis at Barbarenas was designed as a upscale hotel and holistic retreat center that includes elements of natural earthen building and hardscape elements that follow natural contours made from local rock. The landscaping features over 30+ edible plants, many of which are naturalized to the Mexican coast and are well suited to the climate. The canopy includes papaya, banana, neem, and coconut trees while the understory is home to annual vegetables and medicinal perennials. The use of intensive planting and adequate shade trees allows for temperature regulation in the landscape.
